Information on Baer Testing & the ESAA BAER database

Baer testing is primarily for your use as an owner and breeder of healthy English Setters. Test results are always confidential. It is your choice whether you discuss results with other breeders or send your test results in to the ESAA BAER database.

The scientists studying canine deafness think inheritance is a major factor in the kind of deafness we see most often in English Setters. They believe we can identify the patterns of inheritance if we pool our test results and study them statistically. Especially important is information on entire litters as it reveals the patterns more quickly. It is NOT necessary for the scientists to know the identities of dogs to study the patterns.

The ESAA Health & Genetics Committee has developed a database to collect BAER test results. The results will be shared with veterinary scientists in a CONFIDENTIAL format for analysis. Whatever we learn will be shared with all ESAA members. What you as a breeder choose to do with the information is up to you. It is NOT the position of ESAA or its Health & Genetics Committee to tell you how to design your breeding program.

If you wish to send your test results to the ESAA BAER database, basic instructions are summarized below. They differ a bit if you test an individual dog or an entire litter.

Instructions for the ESAA BAER database

Basic guidelines are summarized below. They do differ for individual dogs and litters. Please also read and follow the more detailed instructions listed directly on the Test Form and Application Form. Any questions can be referred to:

INDIVIDUAL DOG:

  1. At the time of BAER testing, you must fill out a Test Form and have the tester write in the results and sign the form. You should also get a copy of the test tracings. It is a major help if the dog's name and/or AKC # and the test interpretation are written directly on the tracing as well. Make xerox copies of the tracings and Test Form to send to the database. ALWAYS keep the originals for your files!
  2. Fill out an Application Form using the instructions under "SINGLE DOGS". Send this along with the xerox copies of the Test Form and copies of the tracings to the Database Coordinator, Jane Wooding.

LITTER OF PUPPIES:

  1. At the time of BAER testing, you must fill out a Test Form listing each littermate on a separate line. The tester must fill in the test results and sign the form. You should receive a tracing of the test results for each puppy. It is a major help if the puppy's name, AKC #, or some form of identification plus the test interpretation is printed directly on the tracing. Make xerox copies of the tracings and Test Form to send to the database. ALWAYS keep the originals for your files!
  2. Fill out an Application Form following the instructions under "LITTERS". Send this along with xerox copies of the Test Form and copies of the tracings to Database Coordinator Jane Wooding.
  3. At the time of BAER testing, most puppies are too young to have individually assigned AKC names and AKC Registration numbers. You will probably be identifying them by a call name, the color of the collar they wear, or some other marking system that you use to tell them apart. While this works fine in the litterbox, we cannot identify them in the BAER Database as red collar, blue collar", etc. Once each puppy has gotten their official AKC name and number, you must fill out another Application Form for each puppy using the instructions "SINGLE DOGS PREVIOUSLY SUBMITTED ON LITTER TEST FORM". No additional tracing or fees need to be submitted at this time. Each puppy who tested BAER normal will then be added to the list of Normals using their official AKC name.
