Roy was found in Massachusetts at a small pound.
Kim Bushey originally rescued him. He stayed with her until Lynda Cetta placed him with an "old lady" in Massachusetts. She said that Roy was delightful and had him there for a few months. She called Lynda one day and told her that he had gone after the landlord, who, unannounced came into her house after banging loudly on the door.
Kim went back to Melinda's and picked up Roy. Paulette Peckol was kind enough to transport Roy to the Combined Setter Specialty in February . She gave him to Sandy Fisher who brought him to me where he remained. Roy had a habit of grinning and bearing his teeth not in an aggressive way but almost like he was trying to speak and tell you something. Most people who looked at Roy were afraid of him because of this particular habit. I had pretty much made up my mind that I would have Roy until the day he died.
Since I do Great Dane Rescue as well, I received a phone call from a lady who had just lost her Great Dane of 10 years, a month ago and had lost her husband two months prior to that. She was devastated and was looking for a Great Dane. Since I didn't have a Great Dane, thank goodness, I invited her to come take a look at what I did have available for adoption. The woman was open minded and was willing to look at the Pointers as well as the other two English Setter rescues which were available. I never mentioned Roy to her but she walked by Roy's kennel to find him curled up on his blanket just wagging his tail and grinning at her. She stopped, spoke to Roy and he just kept wagging and looking at her with the most soulful eyes. She turned to me and said, I have to have this dog. I even tried to discourage this choice but she insisted. I took Roy out of the kennel and brought him in my office where he proceeded to sit down by her side, lay his head in her lap and didn't move except for his wagging tail. She had brought her daughter and two grandchildren and Roy was just as playful as a puppy with the kids.
She was in love with Roy and took him home (She had already been screened including a house check for Great Dane Rescue). So after 10 months in the Mid Atlantic English Setter Rescue, Roy is living happily ever after with his new mom, and has almost an acre of 6 ft. stockade fenced backyard to run to his heart's content. She called me today to tell me, "he's better than a Great Dane", he's a wonderful house dog and companion and he even gets to sleep on the bed with her at night.
